Extending dočasné útočisko: what changed and which deadlines matter

Temporary protection (dočasné útočisko) is not open-ended: it is extended periodically by decisions of the EU and the Slovak government, and holders get their own deadlines and obligations along with it. Here is how an extension works and what you should not miss.

How extensions work

When the government extends the temporary protection regime, the extension for an individual usually happens in one of two ways:

• automatically — if your data is current and nothing has changed;
• in person — with your document (preukaz) updated at a migration point or the cudzinecká polícia.

Which applies to you depends on the current decision. The rules have already changed several times, so relying on what a friend went through last year is risky.

What to prepare

• passport or another identity document;
• your current temporary protection document;
• proof of address if you have moved — for example a čestné vyhlásenie from the property owner.

Typical problems

1. An unreported change of address. The police send notices to the old address and an important letter goes unread.
2. Queues in the larger cities. In Bratislava people start queuing overnight before deadlines. An appointment and documents prepared in advance save a day or two.
3. Plans to move to a residence permit. As a rule, time spent on dočasné útočisko does not count towards permanent residence — so if you intend to stay in Slovakia long term, it is worth planning the switch to a regular permit: employment or business.

If you missed the deadline

Do not panic, but do not wait either: the sooner you go to the police and explain, the easier the status is to restore. Take all your documents and evidence of why the date was missed.
